Since 1996, I have been involved in technology staff development.

In the beginning…

In the summer of 1996, just a month after I finished my teaching credential, I received an e-mail from SDSU Ed Tech Professor Bernie Dodge asking if I was available to help out with a workshop for a San Diego City Schools grant called the Triton Project. During that first summer I spent time developing some model projects that utilized technology, led a couple small break-out sessions, and helped teachers code html while making their first WebQuests. It wasn’t until the last day of the weeklong workshop that I actually got my first teaching job at West Hills.

Over the next five years, Bernie hired me back each summer. By the third year I was leading large groups through the WebQuest process and developing online tutorials for the teachers in the program to use. These experiences would give me an opportunity to stay on the cutting edge of educational technology and inspired me to continue to look for opportunities to participate in technology staff development.

Currently…
I’ve been looking at the best ways to infuse the many Web 2.0 technologies that have become readily available to teachers. Some topics include:

Importance of technology use in today’s world

Mobile Technologies for Teachers

Using technology to increase engagement

All things Google (I became a Google Certified Teacher in 2007)

Online collaboration (for both students and teachers)

Online social communities

Using blogs and wikis with students and teachers

Classroom web site development

Video projects

WebQuests

Web 2.0 Apps

Since 2010, I have been working with Reuben Hoffman, another West Hills teacher, to help spread the tech integration word. Our website, 21st Century Ed Tech Pirateshosts our new workshops. If interested in having us present, contact me at danmcdowell@gmail.com

Additionally, I teach several different courses in the Educational Technology Department at San Diego State (2006-present).

Co-Developed and taught ET 570: Advanced Technology for Teachers (Summer 2011, 2012, 2013)

Taught ET 470: Technology for Teachers (Spring 2010)

Developed and taught ET 700: Educational Podcasting (Spring 2010, Spring 2011, Spring 2012)

Developed and taught ET700: Advanced Digital Video (Fall 2006, Fall 2007)

Taught ET541: Web Based Multimedia Development (Fall 2007, Fall 2009)
